Some of the people we have helped

Our Backyard is a place to connect and start the journey out of homelessness.

Guests can stay up to 30 nights and they receive wrap around supports along the way. We work with other local service providers, women's and men's refuges, nsw housing, community services and non government agencies for assistance.

Typically many have been unable to afford the cost of paying rent, utilities and bills whilst on limited income. We provide our guests access to a financial counsellor too.

A large proportion of those using our services are older Australians on a Newstart Allowance of around $254 per week.

Your generous support continues to make a difference in the lives of people like the ones listed below

* The names below have been changed to protect the identity of those sleeping in their cars

Amy

Amy left her hometown in country Victoria to get as far away from an abusive relationship that she finally arrived in the Hunter Region, out of money and options. Through one of the local agencies Amy found respite for a couple of weeks in the program. Needing somewhere safe where she would not be moved on, Amy sought support from Our Backyard who put her in touch with other service providers. Having somewhere to sleep for a good 8 hours and then wake up with access to a hot shower was something that Amy would describe as helping her to feel better. Amy moved on after a couple of weeks.

Alan & Rachel

Alan & Rachel are from country NSW. They have children who are in foster care until they are able to find stable accommodation. Both have struggled to save money and live on a small income through Centrelink. Our Backyard provides a base where Alan & Rachel are able to rest for a while and re-assess their options. They help tidy up the common areas and are super keen to find employment. They have struggled with homeless for several years and can sometime find temporary accommodation by staying with friends and couch surfing.

craig

Craig has found it difficult to find suitable accommodation due to insufficient funds in his bank account and spiralling debts. It is virtually impossible for Craig to be able to save a deposit for the bond and four weeks rent. Whilst a guest of the program Craig has been able to put aside some savings to help him find somewhere to live a little out of town.

George

George is in his sixties and its the first time he has been homeless. As a result of being a victim George found himself with no where to go. Within a couple of weeks George has been able to find employment which has enabled him to move on.

Brian & Vicky

Having been unemployed for several months, Brian & Vicky have not been able to sustain their tenancy. They chose to sleep in their car as a temporary means until they could either find work or find cheap housing. As both have children living in the area they have decided to stay in the Newcastle precinct rather than moving away too far. Brian and Vicky appreciate access to the services available on site whilst they sort out more challenging problems.
